Two handrails, any length from 1 to 20 feet
Both are welded steel tube, powder coated in matte black or semi-gloss black. Same price either way.
- 2" × 1" rectangle. The easier one to hold. Most people pick this for the main staircase.
- 1-1/2" square. Clean and square. For a modern house or a mid-century one.
Open the product page, slide to your length, and the price is on the page. You see it before you add anything to the cart.
How to measure
Measure nose to nose. The front edge of your first step to the front edge of your last step. That is the number you slide to, and that is exactly what we cut.
If you want the rail to carry 3 inches past each end, there is a button for that on the product page. It adds 6 inches to the rail and you see the new price before you buy.
A landing in the middle, a turn, or a run over 20 feet? Send a picture and rough sizes and we draw it for you first.
What comes in the box
- Your handrail, welded to the length you ordered, powder coated.
- Brackets. The count depends on the length: 2 up to 5 feet, 3 up to 8 feet, 4 up to 12 feet, and so on up to 7 at 20 feet.
- Wood screws for the wall and metal screws for the rail. Going into concrete? Write it in the order notes and we send concrete screws.
- Over 7 feet: the rail ships in sections with a splice sleeve and the screws for the joint.
Both ends turn back to the wall, so nothing sticks out to catch a sleeve.
Most stairs take an afternoon with a drill and a level. The step by step is here: how a wall mounted handrail goes up. The detail on brackets, studs and what is behind the drywall is on the wall mounted handrail page.
Does your stair need a handrail?
A stair with four or more steps needs a handrail on at least one side. Three steps up to a landing usually does not. Four does.
The inspector measures the height from the nosing line, the front edges of the steps. In most states the rail sits between 34 and 38 inches. In a New Jersey home it is 30 to 38 inches since 17 August 2026. We mount at 36, which passes both.
Our rails sit 2 inches off the wall. The code asks for 1-1/2. The extra half inch is the difference between a rail your hand wraps around and one your knuckles drag on.
The full list of what an inspector checks is on our code compliant handrails page.
Inside or outside
Steel or aluminum. Steel indoors, aluminum outdoors. The two rails above are steel and go on inside stairs. For front steps, a porch, or a deck stair, we build the same rail in aluminum. Aluminum does not rust. Ask for a quote and say it is for outside.

Questions people ask
How long should a handrail for stairs be?
Measure nose to nose, the front edge of the first step to the front edge of the last. Order that length. If you want the rail to carry past the top and bottom step, add the 3 inch run-outs on the product page.
How high does a stair handrail go?
It is measured from the nosing line, the front edges of the steps. Most states say 34 to 38 inches. In a New Jersey home it is 30 to 38 inches since 17 August 2026. We mount at 36 inches, which passes both.
Do I need a handrail on both sides of the stairs?
In a house, one side is what the code asks for on a stair with four or more steps. Two sides is your choice. Order two rails at the same length.
What do the brackets screw into?
Wood studs, with the screws in the box. Block or brick takes sleeve anchors instead. Plaster over lath, or drywall with no stud where you need one, needs blocking behind it. Not sure what is behind your wall? Text us a picture before you order.
How fast does it ship?
Built and shipped within 14 days. Shipping is free in the lower 48. If you are in a hurry, a rush build is on the product page at checkout.
