Wall Mounted Handrails

A wall mounted handrail carries the load into your wall instead of standing on posts, so it takes no floor space and nothing gets in the way of the stair. Every rail here is welded to the length you give us — there are no stock sizes to cut down and nothing to trim on site.

What mounting one actually involves

Brackets, screws and a paper drilling template come in the box. How many brackets depends on the length:

• up to 5 ft — 2 brackets
• 5 to 8 ft — 3 brackets
• 8 to 12 ft — 4 brackets
• 12 to 15 ft — 5 brackets
• 15 to 18 ft — 6 brackets
• 18 to 20 ft — 7 brackets

Put them where your studs actually are — that matters more than spacing them evenly. You screw the brackets to the wall first, then the rail drops onto them.

The rail sits 2" clear of the wall. That is more than the 1-1/2" minimum the code asks for, and it is the difference between a rail your whole hand wraps and one your knuckles drag on.

Tell us what is behind the drywall

This is the one thing worth checking before you order. Brackets need something solid:

• Wood studs — the usual case. Find them first. If your stud spacing puts a bracket in an awkward spot, say so when you order and we will work the layout around it.
• Masonry or block — fine, but you want sleeve anchors rather than the wood screws we send. Tell us and we will leave them out.
• Plaster over lath, or drywall with no stud where you need one — that needs blocking behind it, or a mounting board. Ask us before you buy.

Sizing it

Measure nose to nose — the nosing of your first step to the nosing of your last — and slide to that number. That is exactly what we cut. Nothing is added to it.

If you want the rail to carry 3" past each end instead, there is a button for that on the product page. It adds 6" to what we cut and to what you pay, and you see both numbers before you buy.

Rails run 1 to 20 ft. From 7 ft up they ship in sections that join in line with splice sleeves — included, not an upcharge. Both ends are mitred and returned back to the wall so nothing is left sticking out.

Two profiles

• 2" × 1" rectangle — the more comfortable to grip. The default choice for a main staircase.
• 1-1/2" square — geometric and clean, for a modern or mid-century house.

Both are welded steel tube, fully powder coated in matte black or semi-gloss black — same price either way. Outside stairs? Same rail in aluminum — ask for a quote.
