Code Compliant Handrails
Most handrail questions are really code questions. If you failed an inspection, or you are trying not to, this page is the short version of what an inspector is actually looking at — and where these rails land against it.
We fabricate to the International Residential Code as adopted in New Jersey. Your inspector has the final word on your specific stair, and nothing here replaces asking them. But none of it is guesswork either.
Do you even need one?
A handrail is required once a stair has four or more risers. Three steps up to a landing generally does not need one. Four does.
The five things that get flagged
- Height. 34" to 38", measured vertically from the nosing line — not from the tread, and not from the floor. We mount at 36", the middle of the window, so a slightly out-of-level stair still lands inside it.
- Grip. This is the one that fails cheap hardware-store rails. A non-round handrail has to have a perimeter between 4" and 6-1/4" with no cross-section over 2-1/4". A 2×4 fails. A wide decorative cap fails.
- Wall clearance. At least 1-1/2" between the rail and the wall, so your hand can close around it. Ours sit at 2".
- The ends. Both ends have to return to the wall or terminate in a newel or safety terminal. An open end that catches a sleeve or a pocket is a genuine hazard and a common failure. Every rail we ship is mitred and returned at both ends as standard.
- Projection. A handrail may project no more than 4-1/2" into the required stair width, and a residential stair has to keep 36" clear. On a narrow stair, profile choice stops being cosmetic.
Where ours land
Both profiles are IRC Type I and pass the grip rule with room to spare:
- 2" × 1" rectangle — 6.00" perimeter
- 1-1/2" square — 6.00" perimeter
Neither is over 2-1/4" in cross-section, which is the clause most oversized rails fail.
One New Jersey note
New Jersey’s Uniform Construction Code is uniform across the whole state — individual towns cannot write their own railing amendments. If someone tells you your town has a special handrail rule, that is worth a second look.
