Code Compliant Handrails

Most handrail questions are really code questions. If you are checking what an inspector will look for, this page is the short version — and where these rails land against it.

We fabricate to the International Residential Code as New Jersey adopts and amends it (N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.21). Your inspector has the final word on your specific stair, and nothing here replaces asking them. But none of it is guesswork either.

Do you even need one?

A handrail is required once a stair has four or more risers. Three steps up to a landing generally does not need one. Four does.

The five things an inspector checks

• Height. 30" to 38" in a home, measured vertically from the nosing line — not from the tread, and not from the floor. New Jersey took the 34" minimum out on 17 August 2026 and put 30" in its place (2024 IRC R320.2, as adopted and amended at N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.21). If you have read 34 to 38 somewhere, that was the old number. There is a six month grace period, so a job already permitted under the previous edition is still reviewed under it — if yours is permitted, ask your official which edition it sits under. We mount at 36", which sits inside both.
• Grip. A non-round handrail needs a perimeter between 4" and 6-1/4" with no cross-section over 2-1/4". A 2×4 is too big to pass, and so is a wide decorative cap.
• Wall clearance. At least 1-1/2" between the rail and the wall, so your hand can close around it. Ours sit at 2".
• The ends. Both ends should return to the wall or finish in a newel or safety terminal, so nothing is left sticking out. Every rail we ship is mitred and returned at both ends as standard.
• Projection. A handrail may project no more than 4-1/2" into the required stair width, and a residential stair has to keep 36" clear. On a narrow stair, profile choice stops being cosmetic.

Where ours land

Both profiles are IRC Type I and pass the grip rule with room to spare:

• 2" × 1" rectangle — 6.00" perimeter
• 1-1/2" square — 6.00" perimeter

Neither is over 2-1/4" in cross-section, which is the measurement most oversized rails miss.

One New Jersey note

New Jersey builds to one statewide Uniform Construction Code, N.J.A.C. 5:23. Your local construction official is the one who signs off on your stair, so if you are told something different about your town, ask them directly.
